How many times have you listened to “West End Girls” and thought to yourself, I wonder what this would sound like on mandolin? Our guess: zero. Frankly, Jon McLeod aka. the Focussed Distraction never wondered that either. However, a random series of events led to him finding out exactly what it sounds like. Now you can learn too. McLeod tells Cover Me about this cover’s genesis:
To be honest, this song didn’t come about by choice. A lot of the time when I’m messing about with a guitar (or, in this case, mandolin) I’ll have the TV on in the background. [On one occasion,] I’d come up with a pretty simple chord sequence and vocal melody and as I was thinking about lyrics for the song an image of the Pet Shop Boys popped up on the TV screen. I just started singing the chorus to this song with what I’d come up with. It carried on from there.
