This Week on Bandcamp rounds up our favorite covers to hit the site in the past seven days.
It’s Oldies Day on this week’s edition, serving you covers of the hottest hits of yesteryear. Yeah, we’ve got Dylan and the Beatles, but we also dig up some one- or two-hit wonders like Tommy James and the Shondells and the Stoney Poneys. Get nostalgic below.
Many Bob Dylan fanatics would argue for “Abandoned Love” as being one of Dylan’s best unreleased songs, maybe one of his best songs period. The Everly Borthers and George Harrison have already covered the jaunty Blood on the Tracks-era ballad. Now there’s another gem, by Portland Americana band the Waxwings. Note: the free version can be got with the full album.
If you’ve never heard Patricio Rey y sus Redonditos de Ricota, you probably don’t live in Argentina. Starting in 1976, they toured the country and released a dozen albums. This wistful folk cover serves as a fine introduction for the uninitiated.
The combination of guitar lines and drum programming makes this Tommy James and the Shondells cover one to remember. Best of all: It reclaims the song from Tiffany, whose 1987 hit version sullied the tune for a generation.
Linda Ronstadt has had a long and varied career, but it all started here. “Different Drum” was her first hit single, by her short-lived trio the Stone Poneys. The song itself was already a cover though – Mike Nesmith of the Monkees originally wrote it for the Greenbriar Boys.
Nothing notable about the acoustic arrangement of this Beatles classic. What makes it unusual is the slow speed. Hearing it as a ballad changes the tone entirely.
