Over the past few weeks, artists have been unleashing a blizzard of Christmas covers. From live tapings to unexpected albums, these holiday presents came in all shapes and sizes. We kept up as best we could (see ‘em all here), but so many came in we couldn’t possibly post them all. So instead, we collected our favorite Christmas covers from this year in a special mixtape.

This 60-minute tape, which you can download or stream below, mixes the classics with the obscure. It includes refreshingly original covers of famous hymns and unexpected runs through buried nuggets. It finds indie up-and-comers mingling with longtime favorites. Continue reading »

Christmas is a festival of light and joy. As such, those into darkness and sorrow often feel excluded. Party-planners may find themselves asking, “How do I get my congenitally unmerry guest into the holiday spirit?”

Glee Covers Roundup 12/7/10: A Very Glee Christmas

Every Wednesday, our resident Gleek Eric Garneau gives his take on last night’s Glee covers.


In “A Very Glee Christmas,” McKinley High’s glee club kids try to get into the holiday spirit by helping keep Brittany’s belief in Santa Claus alive, but grinchy coach Sue Sylvester has her own plans to wreck the holiday. Meanwhile, Rachel desperately tries to reunite with Finn, and Will continues to sit on a ton of resentment for John Stamos.

Here we are at the halfway point of Glee‘s second season. I’ve got a lot to say about these last 10 episodes, but there’s a half-season roundup post coming soon to take care of that. As for the Christmas episode: it was handled pretty much like one would expect a Glee Christmas show to be, complete with dashes of overblown drama, scoops of sentimentality and a tiny little nugget of genuine emotion at its core. Girl Groups Heart Christmas: New Tunes from Girl in a Coma, The Puppini Sisters, and Sea of Bees

As we pointed out last week, the season of Christmas covers is heavily upon us. So far, the standout entries come from modern-day girl groups (sorry, Susan Boyle). Girl in a Coma, The Puppini Sisters, and Sea of Bees have all delivered beautiful Christmas covers, sounding like indie updates on Andrews Sisters harmonies. Check ‘em out below.

Joan Jett-signees Girl in a Coma bring some Texas punk swagger to Elvis’ “Blue Christmas,” sounding not particularly distraught about their man leaving. It comes off the Blackheart Christmas compilation. The Puppini Sisters’ version of Wham!’s “Last Christmas” swings along more traditionally, with grand pop production that would sound dated in less capable hands. If you like that trio sound, check out Christmas with the Puppini Sisters. Sea of Bees is actually only one girl – Julie Ann Bee – but she layers her vocals plenty thick on “Feliz Navidad.” Proceeds from the single (which you can buy on iTunes) go to The Trevor Project, a suicide prevention group for LGBTQ youth. You all submit so many great covers it’s hard to keep up. When we fall behind, we gather the best and brightest in a Submission Roundup.

Thanksgiving may be over, but today we want to thank all the artists who submit their music. You guys send too many covers to keep up with, so we like to round up some of our favorites before the tunes fall by the wayside. My Morning Jacket Night Four: George Michael, Shel Silverstein, Prince, The Who, and Funkadelic

This past weekend held the final two nights of My Morning Jacket’s epic five-night NYC stand. As we’ve already seen after Night 1 (The Tennessee Night), Night 2 (At Dawn), and Night 3 (It Still Moves), the band performed one of their albums in full every night. Refusing to repeat any songs, they encored not with other album tracks, but with rare and unreleased b-sides and covers.

Their shortest disc, Friday night’s Z saw the most epic encore. Eight songs, five of them covers, one of those over ten minutes long. The quintet roared through recent tunes like Shel Silverstein’s “Lullabys, Legends, and Lies” (download the studio recording here) and classic covers like the Who’s “A Quick One While He’s Away.” View the full set list below and watch videos/download MP3s of the ten-minute version of George Michael‘s “Careless Whisper” and “Lullabys.” Other songs added as video surfaces.
