I’m not sure there were more great cover songs this year than any other. But there were more good ones.

What I mean by that is, the average quality of the covers we come across in the time we’ve been around has risen, rather dramatically. Whether they’re iTunes homepage singles or some guy emailing us his Bandcamp, more cover songs in 2013 avoid the old pitfalls than ever before. They don’t sound like they were recorded in a cereal box, substitute ear-bleeding volume for actual creativity, or – the worst cover sin of all – try to carbon-copying the original. No secret that we love Telephoned. The covers duo of Maggie Horn and Sammy Bananas consistently bring one of the freshest approaches to covers out there. We named last year’s Off the Hook mixtape the third-best covers album of 2010 and now they’ve released another: Good Call. It finds the duo branching out even further to redefine the “cover” concept. Their general M.O. – cover one song while remixing it with another – proves more fluid than ever and the song selection follow suit. Continue reading »

Yes, we know 2010 ended a while ago, but the tributes just keep coming. The latest comes from Irish record label Quarter Inch Collective. They recruited their favorite artists to look back on 2010 with some covers on their new release Quompilation. Thirteen bands put their spin on 2010 hits (Rihanna’s “Rude Boy”) and indie gems (Villagers’ “Becoming a Jackal”). There’s the obligatory Kanye West nod, but generally the choices prove refreshingly unusual. Continue reading »
