In 1961 the Freedom Riders set out to protest segregation in interstate travel, leaving from Washington, D.C. into the Deep South. Their buses were ambushed and set on fire, their bodies beaten by mobs, the Klan and Southern police. Many of them ended up in Mississippi’s Parchman Penitentiary. Expressing their determination, the prisoners would often unite in one voice singing “Ain’t Gonna Let Nobody Turn Me Round.” The song is based on a spiritual called “Don’t Let Nobody Turn You ‘Round.”  With recordings and performances by Joan Baez and other artists, it became known as a freedom-song for civil rights. Back in August, we heard British sensation Anna Calvi cover the Shirelles, Leonard Cohen, and Elvis as B-sides for various singles. Now she’s gone a little more modern on a ripping cover of TV on the Radio’s “Wolf Like Me.” Her fashionable rock swagger keeps the song classy until the end, when all hell breaks loose on one hell of a guitar solo. Anyone familiar with Manchester Orchestra knows that they are no strangers to the cover song. Even more, lead singer Andy Hull has an astounding ability to turn popular indie-pop and rock songs into acoustic masterpieces. We’ve previously posted covers from both Hull and Manchester Orchestra. It’d be impossible to write Hull off as just the lead singer of your typical indie-rock band. He’s actually the front-man of not only Manchester Orchestra, but two other side projects: the folk group Right Away, Great Captain and Bad Books, which he performs in with folk musician Kevin Devine. Quickies rounds up new can’t-miss covers. Download ‘em below.

A couple weeks ago, James Vincent McMorrow broke our hearts with his cover of “Higher Love.” Now, he does it again on Chris Isaak’s “Wicked Game.” He’s been playing it live for a while now, but Vagrant just sent over this gorgeous recording.

Williamsburg, Brooklyn has become synonymous with hipster culture, so it’s no surprise that a covers album featuring a lineup of tracks with serious indie cred would originate in the neighborhood. Somewhat more surprising? That those covers would come from an 11-piece salsa band. The self-titled debut album from the Williamsburg Salsa Orchestra adds some Latin flair to tracks from indie staples including Peter Bjorn and John, TV on the Radio, and LCD Soundsystem.

It’s apparent from the get-go that the WSO is a talented group of salsa musicians. Bandleader Gianni Mano leads the ensemble through the album’s ten peppy tracks with precision and energy. However, the combination of salsa and indie is rather hit or miss, with the up-tempo excitement of the orchestra sometimes overshadowing the content of the song being covered. Blaring horns, timbales, and bongos make for a fun cover of an upbeat track like Peter Bjorn and John‘s “Young Folks,” but can feel overwhelming in quieter moments. Similarly, Solange Prat’s vocals have a very polished, almost Broadway quality that meshes well with the salsa backing but lacks the emotional subtlety needed to get the most out of softer tracks or lyrics originally voiced by less traditional singers. Gerard Smith, TV on the Radio’s longtime bassist, passed away last month and the tributes keep coming. Not surprisingly, everyone wishing to remember Smith seems to be covering the same song: Wolf Like Me. First, the Holidays added a little electronics to the tune. Then, Local H began performing their longtime cover with a “RIP Gerard Smith” shout-out. Now, Atlanta-based folkie Lera Lynn and her bandmate Ben Lewis perform a banjo-driven version that brings out a whole new aspect of the song: the lyrics. Continue reading »
