Last month we saw St. Vincent cover the Pop Group’s “She Is Beyond Good and Evil” at a New York concert. The song has made regular appearances in her live sets ever since and last night she gave it its biggest airing yet on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon. When St. Vincent picks up her guitar to do a cover, she tends to knock us out. Her version of Big Black’s “Kerosene” in May is still being discussed as a touch point for new album Strange Mercy and her pair of Tom Waits covers in July should be as well. Her latest live cover swings in a different direction, to post-punk pioneers The Pop Group. At a New Yorker event a few days back, she performed their debut single “She Is Beyond Good and Evil” and, not surprisingly, slayed it. Continue reading »
