This Week on Bandcamp rounds up our favorite covers to hit the site in the past seven days.

This Week on Bandcamp took a week off last week, so we come back swinging with a double-header. Instead of five tracks…ten! Download the main set first, then scroll onwards for bonus covers of Stevie Wonder, Twin Peaks, XTC, Kurt Vile, and Angus and Julia Stone. Continue reading »

You all submit so many great covers it’s hard to keep up. When we fall behind, we gather the best and brightest in a Submission Roundup.

Thanksgiving may be over, but today we want to thank all the artists who submit their music. You guys send too many covers to keep up with, so we like to round up some of our favorites before the tunes fall by the wayside. Download all the great November covers we didn’t get a chance to post about earlier!

Do you have something to submit? Send it along here! Continue reading »

Last night’s Night of Too Many Stars took over Comedy Central to raise funds for autism. As always, it was aptly titled, with Jon Stewart, Tom Hanks, Steve Carell, George Clooney, Jimmy Kimmel, and Betty White (of course) performing and manning the phones. The high point came during Chris Rock and Tracy Morgan’s moving (ha!) duet on Simon and Garfunkel’s “Scarborough Fair.” Morgan rocks the Garfunkel jew-fro as they warble along.

One person isn’t having it though. That person is Paul Simon. Fed up with their terrible performance, he emerges to rapturous applause to coach the pair on the harmonies. “With all due respect, as a duo, you guys suck,” he says. Dude’s got a point. He tries to teach them the right words, only to be told by Rock: “The lyrics are bullshit!” The zingers fly as it slowly devolves into AutoTune. Before you know it, Paul Simon is rapping Snoop Dogg’s “Gin and Juice” (happy b-day Snoop!) No lie. Watch it below. Right now. Continue reading »

They Say It’s Your Birthday celebrates an artist’s special day with other people singing his or her songs. Let others do the work for a while. Happy birthday!

Note: This post was supposed to go up yesterday, but due to server issues it never did. So a happy belated birthday to Mr. Dogg!

Happy b-dizzle to Cordozar Calvin Broadus, the king of Tha Dogg Pound. Hailing from sunny California, Snoop Dogg turns 39 today and still continues to make cameos on some of the latest pop hits. His association with Dr. Dre, a penchant for the smokier things in life, and of course the addition of “izzle” to our vocabulary have made him a legendary icon in hip hop.

His soothing rap voice is unforgettable, his ability to party is undeniable, and he'll leave you no choice but to join in. For a tough rapper, Snoop has shown he has a sense of humor in various movie roles. Artists have adopted that same humor in their covers of his songs. Continue reading »

Recently we’ve seen quite a few Roots posts (1, 2, 3). We’ve also seen some Jimmy Fallon. We haven’t yet posted the two together though (funny, given that they hang out five nights a week). Well now we can. They’ve even brought along Justin Timberlake, the best third wheel ever.

The trio (Timberlake, Fallon, Roots) takes us through a four-minute medley of rap hits from yesterday and today on last night’s Late Night with Jimmy Fallon. It starts with the Sugarhill Gang and ends with Jay-Z (“Empire State of Mind”). In between they tackle Eminem, Tupac, Kanye, Soulja Boy – well, pretty much everyone. Even the Roots’ own “The Seed 2.0” gets the Timb-Fall treatment. Continue reading »

Learning the origins of artist names is always interesting. Some musicians borrow from an artistic inspiration (Bob Dylan from Dylan Thomas). Others go for weird sex stuff (Captain Beefheart from…something gross). The story of singer Neon Hitch is better than most, because there is no story. Neon Hitch is her real name! Born to a family of traveling street performers, Hitch pretty much had to become a musician with a name like that. I mean, can you imagine applying for a loan from Assistant Bank Manager Neon Hitch or getting a physical from Dr. Neon Hitch, PhD?

Having written hits for Ke$ha and 3Oh!3, Neon is recording her debut for a 2011 release. In the meantime, she’s circulating a Snoop Dogg cover, a cover so good Mr. Dogg (not his real name) tweeted it, giving it the high praise of “im def fealn this.” You’ll def feal this too. Continue reading »
