Let’s rip the band-aid off right up front: “Fleet Foxes Sing” is not actually Fleet Foxes. This needs explaining, because when the first cover popped up on Tumblr last month, plenty of folks bought it. “Fleet Foxes Covered Whitney Houston’s ‘I Wanna Dance With Somebody’,” announced Yahoo. “Fleet Foxes Cover Whitney Houston, Prove They Can Turn Anything into a Campfire Singalong,” crowed The L Magazine. Only problem? The real band’s response. “We didn’t do that Whitney Houston cover,” they tweeted. “Funny though!” Continue reading »

Banjo or Freakout is the one-man band of Alessio Natalizia, but don’t let the moniker fool you. There is very little, if any, banjo in his music. Rather, it consists of layered sounds from electric guitars and synthesizers, often leaning towards dream pop. Sigh.

Let’s just move on. May Ling is a Portland-based musician building a following one raucous house party at a time. On High Score and Records’ free summer mixtape, she covered Carey’s “contribution” to the feud. Removed from the inane cultural context, “Obsessed” improves dramatically. Ling’s ghostly slow-grind vocals help. Continue reading »

Cover Commissions is a monthly series in which a featured artist covers a reader-selected song for this blog. Any artists interested in participating, contact us.

June’s Commissions artist Corey TuT has been rocking his way around New York City for the past ten years, playing legendary venues like Joe’s Pub and CBGB. His poppy punk is what you imagine modern rock radio should sound like (as opposed to the Nickelback garbage they actually play). It’s like Social Distortion if Social Distortion had tried to write hit singles.

Corey’s latest album is Everything and we’ve a track from it below. “So What?” has been featured everywhere from the CW show Life Unexpected to a Totino’s Pizza Roll commercial (so if it makes you hungry, you know why).
