When we last checked in with jj, we mentioned that R&B covers were sort of their thing. That was 2010 though. This fall, they’ve gone ‘80s pop-rock. Their latest cover finds singer Elin Kastlander gently plucking an acoustic guitar to the Outfield‘s biggest (only) hit “Your Love.” Instead of tweaked-out production and reverb-soaked vocals, it’s a plaintive folksy ballad that is absolutely heart-melting. jj has a long history of covering R&B songs. For their friend ceo’s birthday this year, they covered “Birthday Sex” by Jeremih, and prior to that, they covered Akon‘s “Troublemaker.” Throw in their cover of Lil’ Wayne, and you could nearly call them prolific cover artists for a full-time non-cover band. So, considering their love of covering R&B songs, it should come as no surprise that their most recent cover is of The-Dream‘s “Right Side of My Brain.” Continue reading »

If you haven’t heard, perhaps because you have better things to do with your time, Lil Wayne just got out of prison. After eight months in, Wayne’s star has never been higher. Even the New York Times has been live-blogging his release! He spent his final month in solitary confinement, which apparently translated into “Even more time to write lyrics.” Given that his output was so minimal during his stint – he only released one chart-topping album! – we look forward to having him back.

To welcome him home, we present five of our favorite Lil Wayne covers. We have to get this old stuff out of the way now, since by day’s end he’ll likely have dropped two more mixtapes.
