Asher White — Casper (Jessica Pratt cover)


Why does Asher White have a record titled Jessica Pratt? Because, as it turns out, it is a full-length cover of singer-songwriter Jessica Pratt’s 2012 debut record—which happens to be self-titled. Pratt herself approves: “White’s curiously inventive renditions took me by surprise,” she said in a press release. “A broad sweep stylistically and production-wise. Not just homage, but a record in its own right.”

geese you get what you give cover

New Radicals are known for their one-hit wonder, the #36 hit “You Get What You Give,” which also topped the charts in a few countries, such as Canada, and performed pretty well on some niche Billboard charts. Because of its prominence it’s had a fair number of covers over the years.

Probably among the more unlikely of those covers is the new one by buzzband Geese. (Though not as unlikely as their Bieber cover…) At least, it seems a tiny bit unlikely that a hipper-than-thou New York art rock band would cover such a poppy, earnest song. The rock band Geese recently covered the song that launched Justin Bieber’s career- “Baby” for Amazon Music Originals. Geese is a group of rockers out of New York with accolades from sites like Stereogum with titles such as “NYC’s most promising young rockers.” In this cover of “Baby,” the lead singer’s deep buttery voice adds a touch of soul, whereas the arrangement of the guitars and percussion contributes more than a dash of the 60s/70s. The end result is an unexpected, synergistic version of the tune that might have emerged from the era between doo-wop and disco. Continue reading »
