Dom is a solo musical project by Dominic Cournoyer.  Hailing from Worcester, Massachusetts, Dom debuted in 2010 with a critically acclaimed EP, Sun Bronzed Greek Gods, featuring the Boston Music Award song of the year, “Living in America”.  (Not a cover of the James Brown tune from Rocky IV.)

Recently, Dom covered one of Elvis Presley’s most covered songs, “Can’t Help Falling in Love”.  I asked him why he chose to cover that song and he replied that he “just felt what the king was selling only in a more desperate way.” Continue reading »

Festivals often entice artists to perform covers. What better way to convert the uninitiated than by drawing them in with a song they know and then (ideally) hooking them by transforming it into your sound? This past weekend’s Lollapalooza, though, seemed to offer even more cover performances than usual. Greg Kot of the Chicago Tribune even christened Saturday “#80snight” to keep track of all the ‘80s covers performed. Continue reading »

There’s a difficulty in trying to pinpoint what exactly is going on when indie bands cover pop hits. There’s a fine line between ironic fake-seriousness and earnest respect for the artist and the material. With their cover of Lady Gaga‘s “Alejandro,” the band Dom walks this line while kicking dirt all over it and blurring those distinctions. Continue reading »
