A few months ago we heard Dirty Projectors cover “I Dreamed I Saw St. Augustine.” Well, the Brooklyn indier-than-thou sextet must really dig Bob Dylan’s John Wesley Harding, because they’ve returned with another album cut: “As I Went Out One Morning.” The tune comes from the expanded edition of their 2009 breakout Bitte Orca, released today.

“As I Went Out” takes more risks than “I Dreamed” and each one works. The vaguely nasal “aaaaah”s initally sound like a chorus of female Dylan impersonators. “If you can’t dance to this song, you’re never going to have sex again.” If that quip at the beginning of Harper Blynn’s live cover is right, there may never be a second generation of HB fans. Suffice to say, the crowd in this clip don’t exactly rise to the bait. Their loss. This rocking run through Beyoncé’s “Halo” should by all rights get any warm-blooded feet moving.

Mixing in a little Dirty Projectors appropriate, since Beyoncé and her beau Jay-Z are fans of those Brookyln weirdos. It also works surprisingly well. Still, it’s a relief when they return to “Halo.” Continue reading »

A few days ago we posted about the ongoing Levi’s Pioneer Sessions, an ongoing cover series that includes Nas, The Swell Season, and She & Him. The fourth installment comes from Dirty Projectors, the weird alt-indie Brooklyn collective whose Bitte Orca had the indie blogs drooling last year. They cover Bob Dylan’s “I Dreamed I Saw St. Augustine” and it’s less weird than you might expect.
