The Best Cover Songs of June 2025
Alex Lahey — Rock & Roll Queen (The Subways cover)

Four years ago, Australian singer/songwriter Alex Lahey topped our year-end list with a truly phenomenal cover of Faith Hill’s 1998 hit “This Kiss.” She made the Top 10 again in 2023 singing Mama Cass’s Make Your Own Kind of Music.” At this point, whenever Lahey drops a new cover, we’re immediately interested. Her latest, the b-side to a new single supporting trans rights, tackles indie-rockers The Subways 2005 single “Rock & Roll Queen.” Unlike some of her other covers, Lahey doesn’t change it that much (no need to make the already loud-and-rocking song louder and rockier like “This Kiss”). Still, it rips. Continue reading »

Chappell Roan Covers Heart

Midway through her set at the Primavera Sound festival in Barcelona, Spain, Chappell Roan performed a cover of a Heart song that is clearly close to her… well, you get the idea.

After the final notes of “Hot to Go” rang out, the chugging guitar and harmonics that are the instantly recognizably opening to Heart’s “Barracuda,” filled the air. Roan and her band kept close to the original and, given her vocal strengths, hitting some of those Ann Wilson notes did not prove to be any kind of problem. Continue reading »

Best Cover Songs of May
Chewy Rodriguez — Wildest Dreams (Taylor Swift cover)

This beautiful performance aired on South Dakota Public Broadcasting and, as of this writing, has 81 views, half of which are mine. (To be fair, presumably more people saw it when it aired on actual TV). But this Sioux Falls singer-songwriters beautiful Taylor Swift cover deserves a far bigger audience. It’s simply done, no frills or gimmicks, but he sells the hell out of it. Continue reading »

avril lavigne

Avril Lavigne performed a cover of Chappell Roan’s “Pink Pony Club” at one of her most recent live concerts in Moncton, New Brunswick. The artist is currently on her Greatest Hits Tour, which is also being supported by first-rate pop-punk acts such as All Time Low and Simple Plan.

This live version of “Pink Pony Club” was made under stunning magenta lights. Acoustic guitar in hand, she hypes up the crowd, then begins the song. She traded her normally bright timbre for something richer. The cover is like a long crescendo, her backup band eventually adding soft tambourine taps and strummed chords to further support the texture and feeling of the recreated song. Continue reading »

The Go-Go's Cover Chappell Roan

The Go-Go‘s filled their set on night one of Coachella with their brand of upbeat pop music, but in the performing of one of their best-loved songs, they also paid tribute to a performer of today. When the band played their classic “We Got the Beat,” as their final song of their set, the capped it off with a little bit of Chappell Roan‘s “Hot to Go.” Continue reading »

Rick Astley Chappell Roan

1980s pop icon and ageless meme Rick Astley is back in the news—not with yet another a performance of “Never Gonna Give You Up,” but his take on one of the big hits of the past few years. Astley took to YouTube to cover Chappell Roan’s “Pink Pony Club.” Captioning the performance with, “feeling in the pink today. I love this tune,” Astley performs an understated version, accompanying himself on guitar. (And then throwing on a pink cowboy hat for the finale.) Astley’s acoustic version doesn’t cover the same ground that the original does, but it does highlight the quality songwriting and storytelling contained therein.

Roan’s original version of the song was released two years ago and currently is at #8 on the Billboard Hot 100, its highest rank yet.
