The Band of Heathens – El Paso City (Marty Robbins cover)

During lockdown, Band of Heathens hosted a regular livestream variety show called Good Time Supper Club. One segment, “Remote Transmissions,” featured them covering a new song every episode – over 50 in all. They’re collecting some of the best on a forthcoming album of the same name: Remote Transmissions. “Making records is always about cataloging any point in time. We wanted to celebrate the unique collaborative aspect of the show,” guitarist Ed Jurdi told American Songwriter. “What better way to document the last year than with these songs?” First up is this take on a Marty Robbins country classic. Launched back in February 2008, the New York-based indie band fun. — comprised of Andrew Dost, Jack Antonoff, and Nate Ruess (formerly of The Format) — has been hovering quietly under the mainstream radar for quite some time. It really wasn’t until “We Are Young” (featuring R&B singer Janelle Monae) was covered on Glee back in December and featured in a Chevrolet Super Bowl commercial this past February that the three-man band began commanding a lot more attention. It’s a bit of a task to sort through all of the “covers” of Lady Gaga‘s “Born This Way.” For most popular songs, this would be the result of a sheer overwhelming amount of people attempting to replicate the original. With “Born This Way,” however, there’s the added multitude of recordings coming from Gaga’s early Twittering of the song’s lyrics. For that reason, we excluded from consideration anything released before the official song release.

Without further ado we present five premium covers, the latest in our series that has spanned from “F*** You” to “Hold It Against Me.” For an artist who thrives on pushing boundaries as much as Gaga, this song sticks to a cookie-cutter pop mold. The clips in this video roundup, though, manage to bring out all of the song’s personality.
