Sometimes the best way to breathe new life into an oft-covered song is to simplify it. Jay Brannan’s version of Adele’s “Someone Like You,” for example, is delightfully refreshing following a slew of covers and a few months off from the track (it seems the world has moved on to admiring the talented songstress’ latest single, “Set Fire To The Rain“). If you are a good Cover Me reader – or if you haven’t been living under a rock for the past year – you know that Adele has been covered by everyone and their mother. Her songs are hard to resist to new and veteran artists alike. For newer and under-the-radar artists, it is a good way to show off their vocal chops. LA-based Crowd Theory takes advantage of the popularity of the British songstress with their “Someone Like You” cover. Continue reading »

Are you sick to death of Adele covers? Hey, we don’t blame you. We’ve heard a lot this year. If you know you’ll just keel over if you hear another belted tribute to 21, bookmark this page and then walk away. Take a month or two and come back when you’re feeling fresh. Listening to today’s Adele cover with anything but an open mind and open ears wouldn’t do it justice. Continue reading »

Five Good Covers presents five cross-genre reinterpretations of an oft-covered song.

Adele first became known to most (Americans, anyway) after her fiery hit, “Rolling in the Deep” started blowing up airwaves following its release in the States. The astute Cover Me reader may have already noticed the disproportionately large number of great covers that come out of BBC Radio 1’s Live Lounge. Perhaps there’s something in the air there, or maybe just a producer who knows how to bring quality covers out of all their performers. British singer-songwriter Jamie Woon recently emerged from the lounge with a cover of Adele‘s “Someone Like You.” Continue reading »

‘The Best Ever’ series counts down our favorite covers of great artists.

For a band now in its fourth decade, The Cure has enjoyed a surprisingly big year in 2019. Most notably, after fifteen years of being eligible for but mostly ignored by the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, The Cure were finally inducted in April. Then May saw two big anniversaries: The band’s debut album Three Imaginary Boys turned 40 and their most-beloved album Disintegration turned 30. For a band firmly affixed in the classic-rock firmament at this point, they’ve suddenly found themselves back in the spotlight – even if, by all indications, they prefer the dark.

The Cure has never gone out of style in one area though: covers. Whether the band’s in the news or not, every year delivers dozens more versions of “Lovesong,” “Boys Don’t Cry,” and the rest. We whittled them down to the 30 best ever, dramatic reimaginings that veer from gorgeous orchestral ballads to dark post-rock drones.
