pink floyd the wall covers

When Roger Waters began touring his performance of Pink Floyd‘s Dark Side of the Moon, Death Cab for Cutie’s Ben Gibbard quipped that this was “like Ringo doing Sgt Pepper’s.” The point being that Dark Side was really David Gilmour’s baby. Well tonight Waters embarks upon a new tour staging The Wall in its entirety (complete with actual wall). That’s more like Paul McCartney and a resurrected John Lennon doing Sgt. Pepper’s. Waters built the wall once; let him build it again.

In honor of tonight’s tour opener in Toronto, we dedicate the latest Full Album set to Waters’ masterpiece The Wall. At 26 tracks, it’s a pretty massive undertaking, so we’re making it a two-parter. Disc 1 comes today, disc 2 comes tomorrow. Incidentally, this marks only the second time we’ve tackled a double album; the first was a run at the Clash’s London Calling (find it here).

Without further ado, Cover Me is proud to present…The Wall. Part 1.

SIDE A

Primus – In The Flesh?

Primus doing Pink Floyd…it just makes sense.

Kiki & Herb – The Thin Ice

The queer cabaret duo wring out every last ounce of emotion.

Tournesol – Another Brick in the Wall Part 1

Our first cover of this oft-repeated motif is an echoey acoustic rumble.

Luther Wright & the Wrongs – The Happiest Days of Our Lives

These bluegrass jammers covered the entire album. It’s called Rebuild the Wall and is a must-buy.

Snatch – Another Brick in the Wall Part 2

Number two throws in a little dubstep gospel.

Woodpigeon – Mother

Somber, quiet, spooky. From a full-album tribute MOJO magazine compiled earlier this year.

SIDE B

Yonder Mountain String Band – Goodbye Blue Sky

Once you make it past the banter, this live cut showcases down-home picking, back-porch harmonies, and no-rural-metaphor-applies cello.

AGM House Band – Empty Spaces

All in all it’s just another tribute to The Wall. Actual album title.

John Law – Young Lust

Banjo + heavy beats + panting = one of the most inventive covers here.

Tagg – One of My Turns

I can’t hear him sing “Day after day” without thinking, “…alone on a hill.”

Nameless Orchestral Project – Don’t Leave Me Now

Confusingly, “Nameless Orchestra Project” is their name.

Out of Phase – Another Brick in the Wall Part 3

This one comes from another full-album tribute. A thumping-bass electro tribute.

Tufts Beelzebubs – Goodbye Cruel World

A cappella covers than be enormously irritating (hey there, Glee), but these guys nail it.

Check out Part 2 here.
