“This Must Be the Place (Naive Melody)” is a fairly unique song in Talking Heads’ catalogue, especially their early ’80s catalogue. They ostensibly switched instruments to perform it, though the legend overstates this a little bit: bassist Tina Weymouth switched to guitar, guitarist Jerry Harrison, who is also a keyboard player, played bass on a keyboard, and lead singer/guitarist David Byrne played keyboards but also played guitar. Drummer Chris Frantz still played the drums. So take the “switching instruments” with a grain of salt. But it also contains one of Byrne’s most earnest lyrics and is the rare Talking Heads love song (even if Byrne claims it’s made up of non sequiturs). It stands out on Speaking in Tongues and it has become their second most streamed song ever, despite not making the Top 40 when it was released as a single. Continue reading »

The Free Label

We’ve written about a few covers from the online music education service and channel Musora already. They invite bands into their studio and throw a song at them to cover in their own style and record the process for YouTube. The hope is that the band is unfamiliar with the song. Recently, they asked Toronto disco band The Free Label to cover a grunge classic. Continue reading »

Kevin Bacon Sings Sabrina Carpenter

Kevin Bacon covered Sabrina Carpenter…with his pigs on backing vocals. The actor now has a growing list of cover songs and can add “When Did You Get Hot?” to the list. Putting a parody spin on the lyrics, changing the line “Said, ‘Sabrina, don’t you know Devin?” to “Said, ‘I’m Bacon, you must be Kevin,”

Carpenter commented under his video, “the vibes on the farm are immaculate.” It’s already high praise to get the artist to comment on a cover song. But she followed up by sharing the video on her own Instagram with the caption “least expected but best cover of the year award!!”

“When Did You Get Hot?” is one of Carpenter’s latest releases, from her album Man’s Best Friend. Bacon’s choice to cover it highlights the song’s quick rise in visibility. The actor has an ongoing series of stripped-back covers, including singing Beyoncé’s “Heated” to his goats and Miley Cyrus’ “Flowers” with his wife, Kyra Sedgwick. This cover was no different, performed in the sun with himself and his guitar. His vocals carried an easy, conversational tone that arguably is the only way to sing a pop song to pigs.

system of a down snowblind cover

Since Ozzy Osbourne‘s death in July, bands of all stripes have been performing covers of his solo catalogue or his work in Black Sabbath, often in concert. System of a Down is one of the bands covering Sabbath as a tribute to Ozzy, on their summer tour. The difference with the SOAD cover is that they first recorded their version of Sabbath’s “Snowblind” back in 2000 for a tribute album. So they had this one in the bag and added it to their current setlist after Ozzy’s death. Continue reading »

Hinds

Madrid‐based duo Hinds released a studio cover of “Girl, So Confusing” by Charli XCX with a feature from Lorde. The cover is already a staple at Hinds’ live shows, so a streamable version was the next natural step for the band. This release marks the one-year anniversary of Hinds’ fourth album Viva Hinds, a special album because it contained the band’s first Spanish single, “En Forma.” Continue reading »

Boy Soda

“I Write Sins Not Tragedies” was, for over a decade, Panic! at the Disco‘s biggest hit and arguably their signature song until it was eclipsed by “High Hopes.” The plucked cello and (what sounds like a) celesta in the verses made it sound like nothing else on the radio.

Australian R&B singer Boy Soda grew up singing along with “I Write Sins Not Tragedies” on the radio. And now, ahead of his debut album, he’s performed a cover for Australian radio institution Triple J’s long-running cover series “Like a Version.” Continue reading »
