Dominic Fike has won the title of shortest-ever cover on Triple J’s ‘Like a Version.’ The song in question is Primus’ theme song to South Park and lasted a whopping 26 seconds. The cover remained true to the original, with Fike even putting on a voice for the character of Kenny’s lines in the third verse of the song. The Florida-born singer-songwriter told Triple J he always admired the adventurous aspect of South Park. “It feels optimistic when the episode starts,” Fike said. “And it’s funny throughout, which is how I prefer life, and then it ends abruptly, and Primus starts.” Continue reading »

The slow piano cover of an old hit is a 21st century cliché. Ever since Michael Andrews and Gary Jules covered Tears for Fears’ “Mad World” at the beginning of the century for the Donnie Darko soundtrack, the slow piano cover has spread. First slowly and then like wildfire, to the point where now there are thousands on YouTube and numerous movie and TV trailers and soundtracks make use of them. St. Vincent, aka Annie Clark, appeared on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert back in December for the show’s Under the Covers segment. Under the Covers is all about, you guessed it, cover songs, and St. Vincent chose to celebrate David Bowie with a cover of “Young Americans.” In the pre-song interview, she mentioned her first cover of this song was back in 2023 during the annual Love Rocks NYC benefit show. Leon Jean-Marie Releases Idiosyncratic Slow Piano Cover of Talking Heads’ “This Must Be the Place”

“This Must Be the Place (Naive Melody)” is a fairly unique song in Talking Heads’ catalogue, especially their early ’80s catalogue. They ostensibly switched instruments to perform it, though the legend overstates this a little bit: bassist Tina Weymouth switched to guitar, guitarist Jerry Harrison, who is also a keyboard player, played bass on a keyboard, and lead singer/guitarist David Byrne played keyboards but also played guitar. Drummer Chris Frantz still played the drums. So take the “switching instruments” with a grain of salt. But it also contains one of Byrne’s most earnest lyrics and is the rare Talking Heads love song (even if Byrne claims it’s made up of non sequiturs). It stands out on Speaking in Tongues and it has become their second most streamed song ever, despite not making the Top 40 when it was released as a single. Continue reading »

They invite bands into their studio and throw a song at them to cover in their own style and record the process for YouTube. The hope is that the band is unfamiliar with the song.
