In support of their current tour and slot in Australia’s RECONciliation BEATS! festival, Aussie folk-inspired pop duo Busby Marou stopped over at Triple J’s Like A Version and covered Cyndi Lauper’s “Girls Just Wanna Have Fun,” which seems to be undergoing a comeback with other new covers by Gerard Daley and Relient K.

“I was watching [Australian quiz show] Spicks & Specks a couple years ago, and you know when they get up and read the book and go and sing a melody line? [Megan] Washington was on, and she was singing the melody line and it sounded strange but really cool,” said Busby on why they chose to cover the 80s pop classic. “That’s when I thought we could do it acoustic.”

Although the folky cover can be somewhat predictable, Busby Marou does bring a charm to the ’80s anthem with harmonious vocals and an overall feel-good vibe.
