Raphael Camara

Based in Leipzig, Germany, and hailing from Metro Manila, Philippines, Raphael Camara is a student, music blogger, and cover song enthusiast. If seen without his iPod and a set of worn-out earphones, something is probably terribly wrong. Aside from obsessively scouring blogs for new music and creating playlists at every opportunity, he also enjoys writing and runs a blog on the side. If you should like, you could check it out here.

Raphael Camara was raised in the Philippines and is currently based in Leipzig, Germany. He’s been writing for Cover Me since 2014. Of all his Cover Me pieces, he especially likes his pieces on Aurora covering Bowie and Dani Mari & Second Sky covering Radiohead.

On September 2, 2014, Ray gave the go on my first news article and published it to Cover Me (unbeknownst to him, it was also my birthday). It’s been nothing but great fun working with the crew here and this fall we celebrate our Aluminum Anniversary by asking our team to compile a list of covers they hold dear.

Down below, in no particular order of importance, are my picks. Enjoy!

Radiohead is one of those bands whose music is pretty tricky to cover right – it takes guts to tackle any of the legendary English band’s tracks. But Chicago-based electronic producer Shallou aka J Boston is unfazed. His new cover of Radiohead‘s “Motion Picture Soundtrack,” recreates the somber tune with a chill and relaxing tone reflecting his equally laid-back repertoire.

By molding Kid A‘s (2000) dreamy closing track to his liking, he leaves behind the track’s gloomy origins in favor of a more laid-back version ripe with classic feel-good indie vibes. He said this about the cover: Continue reading »

Toronto quartet BADBADNOTGOOD have been making waves in the jazz scene for quite some time now, but six years into their music career, they still like to blow their listeners away with new material and slick covers.

For their latest session on Triple J’s Like a Version, the band tackles The Beach Boys 1966 classic  – first giving it a beautiful prelude led by Leland Whitty on soprano sax, before the all-too-familiar “God Only Knows” bass line kicks in, with the rest of the band expertly weaving their way through the tune, giving a fantastic performance that leaves you craving for more. The Grateful Dead – the iconic (nay, legendary) Palo Alto ensemble whose longevity, sheer number of live performances, eclectic and improvisational musical styles, as well as religious fanbase cemented them as one of the most influential and groundbreaking groups of rock and roll history – will be honored this May in an upcoming epic homage titled Day of the Dead.

As one of our own feature writers, Jordan Becker, so elegantly put in his In the Spotlight segment: “The Dead were not only a band; they typified a lifestyle that extended the hippie culture of the 1960s decades after most of the world turned it into a punchline.” Dubbed the “pioneering Godfathers of the jam band world,” their legacy lingers on, and with contributions from an overwhelming number of some of the music industry’s most respected names today, their music will be celebrated. Ghostly vocals and dreamy acoustic guitar strums melt together to form raw and emotional covers – such is the style of mysterious New York musician Radiochaser, who drew us effortlessly in with his chilling covers of Taylor Swift, Carly Rae Jepsen, and Selena Gomez earlier this year.
