weezer covers metallica

Weezer played Coachella this past weekend and, on top of playing a bevy of their hits, they also threw in one of their more popular covers, Metallica’s “Enter Sandman.”

The group has performed this live in the past and, recorded a version of the song on the 2021 tribute album, Blacklist, which featured covers of every song on Metallica’s “Black Album.” Their version hews pretty closely to the original, with most of the joy of the performance coming from seeing lead singer Rivers Cuomo try to ape James Hetfield’s vocals. Though they did toss in a “Buddy Holly” reference into the song, ending the song’s solo with the popular nine-note ending riff. (They then closed their set with the song.)

Cuomo has said Metallica was his favorite band when he was in high school.

best loop

Chicago-based punk rock band Best Loop released a new EP last week, on the occasion of International Trans Day of Visibility. And the EP is made up entirely of songs written and performed by Laura Jane Grace.

The EP, titled, Reinventing Laura Jane Grace, features three covers chosen from across Grace’s career. The album opens with “Cuffing Season,” which originally appeared on Grace’s 2024 album, Hole in My Head. While the original was acoustic, the Best Loop version is electric and has a punk edge to it.

Also featured on the EP is Against Me!‘s “Borne on the FM Waves of the Heart,” and “Shame.” (Grace fronted Against Me! from 1997 until the band’s indefinite hiatus in 2020.)

Best Loop member said in a press release announcing the EP, “Seeing Laura’s past support of the Girls Rock Camp Movement, combined with a friendly dialogue when we reached out snapped everything into place immediately. Though we have always been a punk band in style, we wanted this release to match that ethos in substance.”

The EP is available digitally via BandCamp and all the funds raised will be donated to Girls Rock! Chicago, which is dedicated to offering programs and camps for girls, transgender and gender-nonconforming youth.

Pretty much every band now has some sort of a weekend getaway festival event on their yearly calendar and My Morning Jacket are no different. This past weekend, the band held their third annual “One Big Holiday” event, this time in Miramar Beach, Florida. The festival kicked off on Thursday, with MMJ taking the closing spot. After playing a few songs off their most recently released record, the band wrapped up the evening by inviting members of the Preservation Hall Jazz Band to join them on stage. After a performance of MMJ’s “Highly Suspicious,” the bands broke into a lovely version of British 1970’s funk band Cymande’s “Bra.” Continue reading »
