Greg Duncan

Greg was born, raised and still resides in the middle of nowhere, Winnipeg, Manitoba (look it up, it actually is the middle). He inherited his love of covers from his father, who used to sit him down and make him listen to old jazz standards and whistle the themes through the solos. In the real world he is a critical care nurse, but outside of work he's an amateur guitarist who has a strange obsession with old-time, fingerstyle guitar and pop music (go here for an example). He has a long history of expressing opinions about music, often having to later eat his own words.

The most famous alumnus of the London School of Economics, the original frontman and arguably the first capital ‘R’ rock star, Mick Jagger turns 68 years old today. His path veered away from business studies when he, by chance, met up with an old school acquaintance, Keith Richards, at a train station and formed a rhythm and blues band in 1960. Becoming The Rolling Stones in 1962, they went on to become the greatest rock and roll band of all time, with 10 of their albums in Rolling Stone magazine’s list of The 500 Greatest Albums of All Time. Regular readers here at Cover Me know that every Tuesday for the past few months, the folks over at the A.V. Club have squeezed an indie band into a very small room in their office to record a cover from a preselected list of tunes. Last week was particularly nuts, but this week the Get Up Kids go Undercover with their version of Blur’s “Girls and Boys.” For many on this side of the pond, this song marked the opening salvo in the Britpop invasion of the mid-’90s that brought us such bands as Oasis and The Verve. With its bouncing bassline and deliberately over-accented lead vocal, the tune charmed many. Continue reading »

Artist, activist and new media pioneer Maya Arulpragasam, better known to the world as M.I.A., turns 36 today. A Briton of Tamil descent, she started as a visual artist, attending London’s Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design. While there, she met Elastica’s Justine Frischmann and designed the cover art for their final single. Urged on by Frischmann and Peaches, whom she met while filming a video document of Elastica’s last tour, she began recording music in her bedroom. Continue reading »

Relentless touring, releasing almost an album a year for the last 10 years, their work ethic seems more akin to the artists of yesteryear than to today’s one-album-every-three-years darlings. Brian Wilson‘s life followed such a trajectory after the release of his masterpiece, the Beach Boys’ Pet Sounds.
