Eric Taylor

Eric lives in the great state of Utah. He likes (virgin) piña coladas and getting caught in the rain. He also likes to speak in third person. He became really interested in cover songs when he first heard Tiffany's cover of Tommy James' "I Think We're Alone Now". (He was 15. Don't judge.) He worked for 20 years on the radio, but wanted to make more money, so he became a school teacher.

dom

Dom is a solo musical project by Dominic Cournoyer.  Hailing from Worcester, Massachusetts, Dom debuted in 2010 with a critically acclaimed EP, Sun Bronzed Greek Gods, featuring the Boston Music Award song of the year, “Living in America”.  (Not a cover of the James Brown tune from Rocky IV.)

Recently, Dom covered one of Elvis Presley’s most covered songs, “Can’t Help Falling in Love”.  I asked him why he chose to cover that song and he replied that he “just felt what the king was selling only in a more desperate way.” Continue reading »

It seemed like you couldn’t get away from Bonnie Raitt in the ’90s.  It all started with her Grammy Award-winning album, Nick of Time.  That led to a few more platinum albums, Top 40 hits on the Pop, Rock and Adult Contemporary charts, a few more Grammy Awards as well as an and an induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

And then she just kind of disappeared. Continue reading »

mac miller

Let me state, for the record, that I am a Billy Joel fanatic.  I have seen “The Piano Man” in concert more times than I have fingers to count.  I have purchased every song that he has ever recorded – including his stuff with The Echoes and The Hassles. Heck, I almost named my first daughter “Alexa”, because that’s Joel’s daughter’s name (my wife put a stop to that however).

Needless to say, I am very protective and picky when it comes to Joel covers.  So when I heard that some hip-hop artist from Pittsburgh – Mac Miller – covered my second favorite Joel song, “Vienna”, I immediately assumed I would hate it. And I was right.

But then I listened to it again.  And again.  And again. Continue reading »

mayhem

The Electric Mayhem has been The Muppets house band since the early years of The Muppet Show.  The band has always been led by vocalist/keyboardist Dr. Teeth (“golden teeth and golden tones”) supported by Janice on lead guitar, Floyd Pepper on bass, saxophonist Zoot, and, of course, Animal on drums. In the past, The Electric Mayhem has covered quite a few songs (their version of “Little Saint Nick” rivals the Beach Boys).  Most recently they covered Kool & The Gang’s funk classic “Jungle Boogie” and now they take on Paul Simon’s 1973 hit, “Kodachrome” for their new ABC show. ciara-2015-epic-records-billboard-650

Vin Diesel’s latest movie, The Last Witch Hunter, hit theaters last weekend.  With it comes a cover of the Rolling Stones’ classic, “Paint It, Black” by Ciara. And I’m not going to lie.  I assumed that “Ciara Covers The Stones” was bound to be an inevitable train wreck.  Not that I have anything against Ciara, but because it just seemed like an odd choice.

Even she even admitted to Rolling Stone that it was a surprise to be asked to do this song.  “I had never thought to cover this song. It was never on my radar to cover it, but when the opportunity came along, I was very thrilled.”

However, once I listened to the song, I knew that I was listening to one of my favorite covers of the year. Continue reading »

What would Halloween be without a song about ghosts?

Okay, I realize that the Psychedelic Furs’ “The Ghost in You” is as much about ghosts as Dylan’s “Rainy Day Women #12 & #35” is about girls with umbrellas, but hey, it’s Halloween and there is a ghost in the title. Continue reading »
