Caroline Lees

Caroline is a devoted Anglophile and Literary & Cultural Studies grad student from outside Baltimore. In her free time, she collects vinyl and travels excessive distances for concerts. (Most excessive? Dublin and Copenhagen.) If a genie granted her three wishes, she’d wish to see The Libertines circa 2001, Springsteen circa 1976, and the Pogues when Shane MacGowan had teeth. She loves Arcade Fire, running, and shoes, and often enjoys all three at the same time. Currently, she's working her way through the 50 states via music, literature, and history on the blog Space and Progress.

Electronic duo/producer team The Knocks are experts at making their mark on the work of other artists. They’ve crafted remixes for big names like Katy Perry and Britney Spears. They also create original music, and their latest production, a cover of M83’s single “Midnight City,” infuses the track with the polished electronic style of their own work. The NYC-based pair enlist vocalist Mandy Lee to round out their cover. Continue reading »

Mashups are usually the realm of DJ’s, not singer/songwriters who favor acoustic guitars. Texas-based musician Aaron Kaufman is breaking the mold, however, with some creative mashups that pair a classic track with a modern hit. A few months ago he combined Lady Gaga’s “Edge of Glory” with Hall & Oates’ “Rich Girl,” and his most recent mashup pairs his takes on Gotye’s much-covered single “Somebody That I Used to Know” and The Beatles classic “Can’t Buy Me Love.” Continue reading »

Arctic Monkeys have been on quite the covers kick lately. Frontman Alex Turner recently stopped by Australian radio station Triple J for a solo performance of Patsy Cline’s “Strange.” This week the Sheffield quartet visited the UK’s Radio One and premiered their take on Katy B‘s “On a Mission.” Continue reading »

Australian radio station Triple J might have to consider renaming their popular “Like A Version” segment “The Black Keys Cover Sessions.” Two tracks from the Akron, Ohio duo have been covered during “Like A Version” sessions in the last few months. Aussie rapper Phrase gave us his take on “Tighten Up” in October, and this week former Australian Idol contestant Matt Corby covered El Camino’s lead single, “Lonely Boy.” Continue reading »

The Avett Brothers are never ones to shy away from a cover or two. So it makes perfect sense that they’re contributing to the much-anticipated (and cumbersomely named) Chimes of Freedom: The Songs of Bob Dylan Honoring 50 Years of Amnesty International. The collection of 75 (75!) Bob Dylan covers on four discs will be released tomorrow, so the Avetts stopped by Late Night with Jimmy Fallon last week to promote the collection with their contribution, a cover of “One Too Many Mornings.” Continue reading »

Recording a Bruce Springsteen cover is practically a musical rite of passage; no band seems able to resist the urge to make their mark on “Born to Run” or “Dancing in the Dark.” The latest Springsteen cover comes from Sydney-based band Charlie Horse. This week, the duo released their take on Springsteen’s “Atlantic City” as a free download. Continue reading »
