Meshell Ndegeocello has released the final single in anticipation of her upcoming album, Synonym. The single is also the closing track on the album and features Bill Callahan and Chris Thile in a moving version of Bob Dylan‘s “With God On Our Side.”
“I was challenged to take this folk song and make it feel like I hear it,” said Ndegeocello. “It’s like putting together a puzzle with all these little pieces. Rearranging allows me to give more respect to the song. Bill Callahan’s voice to me is enchanting and just draws you in. And then my other angel is Chris Thile. He’s a very grounded human being; I just love the earthiness of his voice.”
This version slowly builds with an insistent drum beat and dissonant sounds that eventually resolve back to the voices and mandolin. It’s a moving cover.
We’ve previously covered the release of other album tracks, “Knew You Were Waiting on Me,” and “Don’t You Want Me.” Synonym, which features appearances by Cynthia Erivo, Cat Power, Brandi Carlile and WILLOW among others, will be released on October 2nd.
