Since the news broke on August 25th, musicians have been including one of Dolly Parton‘s songs in their live performances as a tribute to the late country music singer and songwriter. Jack White, who has a long history of adoring Parton, was one of the first. At his show in London at the Eventim Apollo, White tore into an emotional version of Parton’s “Jolene.” It was his first live performance of the song in 20 years.
White also shared two pictures of Parton on Instagram. The first one was a short clip of his “Jolene” performance with the caption, “Your beauty is beyond compare.” The second post was a picture of Parton taken in 1965 with a two-word caption: “Instant sainthood.”
White first showed his love for Parton with The White Stripes, where they released their take on “Jolene” in 2000 on a b-side to their single “Hello Operator.” They also released a live version of the song in 2004, which reached 16 on the UK singles charts.
