Jam band Dogs in a Pile played a homecoming gig in Asbury Park, New Jersey at the Stone Pony and as part of the celebration, included a brand new cover (for them) of a Smashing Pumpkins song in the set. The cover of “Cherub Rock” popped up during the band’s second set, which began with a performance of their song, “Tillie.” (Which is named after the smiling face painted on the side of a boardwalk arcade.) After a 23+ minute version of the song, the band appeared to be transitioning into playing the Grateful Dead‘s “Truckin'” when drummer Joey Babick kicked off with “Cherub Rock”‘s memorable snare drum roll opening.
As the fanshot video below shows, audience members quickly realized what they were hearing and the cameras came out. The performance of the song is pretty faithful to the original, down to the guitar solo. “Cherub Rock” was the first single of the Smashing Pumpkins’ second album, Siamese Dream.
