Anna Calvi recently opened for David Byrne on two nights of his ongoing “Who is the Sky,” tour, in both Halifax and Cardiff. During her set, Calvi was joined by Byrne to perform the cover song they had recorded together in 2014. “Strange Weather” was recorded by Calvi and Byrne for her all covers EP, Strange Weather. The song was originally written and performed by Israeli/French/Dutch musician Keren Ann on her 2011 album, 101.
Commenting on the original studio recording, Byrne said, “I was invited to suggest songs and I loved the last Keren Ann record and I thought “Strange Weather” had a haunting quality that might suit Anna…. so we did that, and Anna then suggested I join in.” This live version is a great, haunting version and the combination of Byrne and Calvari’s voices is truly moving. (Even if Byrne needed a lyric sheet to sing along.)
