Much is being made of the newest Rolling Stones album, Foreign Tongues, and this latest chapter in the continuing adventures of the self-proclaimed world’s greatest rock band. On the new record, the Stones feature a few covers alongside their originals. One of those covers is Amy Winehouse’s “You Know I’m No Good.” (Winehouse performed alongside the Stones in 2017 at the Isle of Wight Festival, where they played The Temptations’ “Ain’t Too Proud to Beg.”)
The song is a pretty solid version of the song, with Mick Jagger playing harmonica to cover some of the horn parts from the original. (It’s also in the same key as Winehouse’s.) The band has released a visualizer video to promote the song.
For the Stones, their brief encounter with Winehouse should have been longer. Ronnie Wood, the one Stone who spent time with Winehouse and who tried to talk with her about her addictions, (Wood himself is a recovering addict) said “I’m sad because she didn’t do her full span. It was like saying goodbye to Billie Holiday again.” Meanwhile, Keith Richards added that he was “very glad and honored” to have played with Winehouse, adding that he thought, “‘Well, I’m bound to meet her down the road.'”
Foreign Tongues, the Stones’ 25th album, is out now.
