Margo Price has made no secret of how she feels about current events happening in Washington and perhaps the most tangible example of that is her new mixtape, which she released on July 3rd, titled Days of Unrest.
And one of the centerpieces of the record is when Price is joined by Joan Baez for a cover of Woody Guthrie‘s “Deportee (Plane Wreck at Los Gatos).” Featuring a beautiful backing by the Memphis Mariachi, the song is a moving tribute to a 1948 plane crash that killed 32 people. The press didn’t bother to name the 28 migrant farm workers killed, instead referring to them merely as “deportees.”
Price has been covering the song live for a few years now. Explaining what drew her to it, Price said, “I first heard it when I was watching Joan Baez and Bob Dylan sing it on The Rolling Thunder Review. Joan Baez has inspired me beyond words, so to have her voice on this recording feels surreal.”
Also featured on the record is a cover of Bob Dylan‘s “Maggie’s Farm,” and Blaze Foley‘s 1984 song, “Oval Room.” Regarding “Oval Room,” Price said “covering this song, as well as the other tracks on Days Of Unrest, is how I protest.”
