Rosé and Bruno Mars‘ “APT.” took a Korean drinking game, Toni Basil’s “Mickey” and a hooky pre-chorus reminiscent of “Bad Romance” and turned it into the best-selling song of 2025. But what happens when Musora takes it on?
Musora is a Canadian music instruction company with a few different platforms. Their flagship platform has a fun gimmick where they bring in a band, usually a Canadian one, and get them to cover a song from a wildly different genre on the spot. We’ve written up:
- A folk rock cover of “Toxicity”
- A screamo cover of “Call Me”
- A prog metal cover of “Take On Me”
- A funk cover of “Them Bones”
All of these were done by these bands with no advance notice and limited planning and rehearsal time. It’s a great series both because the covers are very entertaining, even if they are extremely gimmicky, and because we get to watch how bands think about music. The latest in the series is Canadian technical death metal outfit Archspire covering, yes, the song of 2025, “APT.” What is technical death metal? Well, it’s a more musically ambitious, technically complex version of death metal (death metal is the extra growly metal).
And Archspire deliver the goods. The pre-chorus is still recognizable and the song is still identifiable thanks to the captions but it’s pure technical death metal. All the pop polish from the original is gone, replaced by deep death metal growls, blast drumming and furious riffing. One of the guitarists plays the pre-chorus melody while everyone else shreds behind him, but they drop out for one repetition which is the closest this cover ever gets to resembling the catchiness of the original.
The performance starts at 7:58 but the first eight minutes are fun too.
