Hard rock band Tesla has released a new single in advance of their new album, which will be a tribute to some of their favorite artists. It’s “Spread Your Wings,” a cover of the Queen song from their News of the World album.
“‘Spread Your Wings’ for me was the song I always wanted to record by Queen,” wrote Tesla keyboardist Brian Wheat. “I always felt it was the one song they had in their catalog that should’ve been a massive hit, but wasn’t because it was overshadowed by ‘We Are the Champions’ and ‘We Will Rock You’ on the News of the World album. It was also a song written by John Deacon, who was the band’s secret weapon and whom not many people talk about, the quiet one, shall we say.”
Tesla’s version is a nice combination of the original and their own sound. Lead singer Jeff Keith will never be mistaken for Freddie Mercury, but here it serves the song’s benefit instead of a hindrance.
The new record, fittingly titled Homage will be released on July 17th. That same day, the band kicks off their tour with Mötley Crüe, which will be crossing the US for the rest of the summer.
