One of the highlights of the ongoing Claypool Gold tour has been seeing Les Claypool‘s various groups come together on stage to perform together at several times during the evening. The tour features performances by The Fearless Flying Frog Brigade, The Claypool Lennon Delirium, (which Claypool co-fronts with Sean Lennon) and, of course, Primus.
The night I saw the show in Asbury Park, the three bands came together for a truly epic performance of The Beatles‘ “Tomorrow Never Knows” with Sean Lennon singing his dad’s words. In South Carolina on June 17th, it was during the Primus set that things got interesting. With Primus members Larry “Ler” LaLonde and drummer John Hoffman already on stage, the trio was joined by Lennon, Delirium keyboardist Harry Waters, drummer Paulo Baldi, percussionist Mike Dillon and saxophonist Skerik. From there the band segued from Primus’ “Too Many Puppies,” to The English Beat‘s “Mirror in the Bathroom.”
While Claypool’s Frog Brigade played the song on a 2023 tour, this was a debut cover for Primus. Part of the enjoyment of the tour is seeing the bands interact, and the fan shot video of this performance is no exception.
The tour runs through July 4th, wrapping up in California. Primus has said a new album is planned for release in 2027.
