J Mascis and Mike Watt are both legends of rock, both solo and with their groups Dinosaur Jr and the Minutemen, respectively. And on this new record, it’s 1991 all over again.
On a new 7″, the two cover each other. On his side, Watt takes on “The Little Baby” from Dinosaur Jr’s 1991 EP Whatever’s Cool with Me (Watt’s former Minuteman drummer George Hurley also plays on the track). On Mascis’ side, he covers, not the Minutemen, but Watt’s other band, fIREHOSE, offering up a version of 1991’s “Formal Introduction.”
Both tracks have mutated to a point where they almost sound original to the artist. “The Little Baby” is a fun track with Watt basically screaming through it, while “Formal Introduction” could easily be mistaken for a Mascis track.
This is the third in a series of 7″s from Red Parakeet. Previous editions featured Watt covering and being covered by Slint‘s Papa M and Tim Kerr from the Big Boys.
