The Black Keys have released a new record and it’s an all-covers affair, starting with the lead-off single, “You Gotta Lose” by Earl Hooker. Peaches! is the band’s third all covers effort after the 2006 EP Chulahoma dedicated solely to Junior Kimbrough and their 2021 album Delta Kream.
The band approached the recording as loose as possible; drummer Patrick Carney suggested the ‘get all the musicians in one room and play’ idea after lead singer and guitarist Dan Auerbach‘s father began a battle with esophageal cancer.
Describing the recording sessions to the NME, Auerbach said, “We weren’t making a record. We were just jamming, like this is for us… Really primal, in a moment when all the nerves were raw, just kinda screaming. We were going through a lot, trying to lift our spirits. I think my dad getting sick made me not give a fuck and just wanna scream for a bit.”
A second single, “Where There’s Smoke, There’s Fire,” (originally made famous by Willie Griffin) in which the recording ethos is just as audible.
The band is currently touring Canada, but will be in the States next month as they will spend much of the summer on the road.
