This past weekend was the fourth American Music Honors Ceremony, a program created by the Bruce Springsteen Archives & Center for American Music. At the ceremony, which celebrated Patti Smith, Dionne Warwick, Dr Dre and the E Street Band, the latter’s leader took the stage to pay tribute to another one of those honored: The Doors. Bruce Springsteen performed his first ever live version of “Light My Fire” at the show.
In a short speech before the performance Springsteen reassured audiences by way of introduction, “There is no one in the room in danger of filling Jim Morrison’s leather pants tonight.” Joining Springsteen was Doors drummer John Densmore, fellow E Street member Little Steven Van Zandt and his backing band, The Disciples of Soul.
Talking about the honor afterward, Densmore noted that Springsteen and his future wife Patti Scialfa saw The Doors when they played Asbury Park in 1968. “Hey, if our music helped Bruce shout out his bride, I’m hip. It apparently worked. They’ve been together quite a while.”
You can watch Densmore’s speech in the video below, or skip ahead to “Light My Fire,” which kicks in around 14:55
