It was January 2023 when Daughtry and Lzzy Hale from Halestorm collaborated on a cover of Journey‘s “Separate Ways (Worlds Apart)”. On May 15th, the two again joined their voices to perform the song at the Sonic Temple festival in Columbus, Ohio.
“Chris Daughtry and I have been threatening to unleash a duet for years,” wrote Hale in 2023 when the studio version was released. “What better way to do that than by paying tribute to one of our mutual influences…. JOURNEY!”
This collaboration has been decades in the making. The two have been talking about collaborating since 2008. Said Hale of Daughtry, “Chris is one of those guys that since we met, no matter where you are in the world, you can pick up right where you left off. You don’t have to talk to each other all the time. We’re just on the same wavelength — and not to mention his incredible voice. I’ve sung with a lot of people and had a lot of collaborations in my day, and with Chris, we can kind of go toe-to-toe, and he’s just as nerdy about it as I am.”
One of the joys of watching the performance is seeing the excitement and fun the singers are having. And certainly, vocally, the two can meet Steve Perry’s vocal range and passion. The two have performed the song live before, with one of the more notable performances being at the Royal Albert Hall in London in 2023. “Separate Ways (Worlds Apart)” first appeared on Journey’s 1983 album Frontiers and was written by keyboardist Jonathan Cain and lead singer Steve Perry.
