The music app Musura invited emo band Thursday to take part in their “Covers On the Spot” challenge. The guest is played a song and has only a few hours to interpret and record their version in their style. The band deflates hearing the distinctive vocals of Linda Perry come through the speakers, you get a sense of the challenge they feel as they try to figure out what to do with 4 Non Blondes’ “What’s Up.”

“It’s the most acrobatic vocal I’ve ever heard in my life, and I don’t have any of those notes in my voice,” vocalist Geoff Rickly says as they listen to it for the first time. (The group eventually decides to try a Cure-esque version of the song, which seems to work.) The artistic process is always fascinating to watch and that is the case here. And the finished version is a great combination of Thursday and Perry’s song.

Thursday is about to kick off a headlining spring tour before playing the Aftershock festival this summer.
