SZA

Joining in on the popular online trend, SZA has released her cover of the Goo Goo Dolls‘ 1998 hit “Iris,” via Instagram. SZA’s release was a new take, where most users just post pictures of themselves in the ’90s with the original version of the song playing. “Trend had me so cooked I couldn’t stop singing it so I made my own deep fried goo goo doll tease,” she said in her Instagram post, sharing photos of her childhood.

Her take is more of an electronic dance groove than the acoustic one of the original, but that haunting melody remains the centerpiece.

How did the original performers feel? Well, it seems the admiration goes both ways. The band’s official account commented under her post with three heart emojis, to which SZA responded, ““Omg?” she wrote with that just-about-to-cry emoji. “UR SONG MAKES ME CRY IT ALWAYS HASSSS !!!! I feel like ur talking to me .. we all do . THANK YOU.”

“Iris” was written by lead singer and guitarist Johnny Rzeznik for the Nicolas Cage/Meg Ryan film City of Angels before appearing on the band’s album, Dizzy Up the Girl. SZA, meanwhile, has had a pretty good year thus far, winning a Grammy for Record of the Year, and contributing a song to the new Pixar film, Hoppers.
