BBC2’s “Piano Room” session has become a great source for covers, since almost every guest plays one. Icelandic/Chinese singer Laufey just appeared on the program and played her new single, but she also offered up a cover of a Joni Mitchell classic.
With the backing of the BBC Radio Symphony, she performed 1969’s “Both Sides Now.” Now, this is a song that would be hard to produce a terrible version of, especially when you include a symphony. And Laufey did a great job pulling up the emotion that the music pulls up. Mitchell first released the song in 1969, then it appeared again on her 2000 album Both Sides Now, that version also appearing in the film Love Actually.
You may also have heard Laufey during the Olympics, where gold-medal-winning American women’s skater Alysa Liu included her song “Promise” in her short program. “How I Get” will be included on the deluxe edition of Laufey’s A Matter of Time, out April 10th.
