MJ Lenderman‘s recent appearance on the Adam Friedland Show began with his cover of Warren Zevon‘s classic, “The French Inhaler.” Lenderman stripped the song down to just vocals and a guitar, allowing the listener to focus on the lyrics, always a good idea with Zevon songs.
The song, which first appeared on Zevon’s self-titled album, is a kiss-off to his ex-wife, but, like with most things, the pain and hurt remain. Lenderman taps into this sadness perfectly. Also on the program, Lenderman performed a new song, “Stay at Home Cowboy.”
Friedland dubbed the show the first of a series titled “The Adam Friedland Show Unplugged,” which would feature musicians performing their songs stripped down from the original version. “Some of them will be shorter — just performances and then five-minute interviews,” he said, maybe jokingly. Meanwhile, Lenderman is prepping to hit the road with Waxahatchee, starting in April.
