Performing on the Australian radio Triple J show “Like a Version”, Franz Ferdinand decided to cover one of the nation’s great rock bands by taking on Amyl & the Sniffers’ “U Should Not Be Doing That.”
Why’d they choose that song? “It puts me in a great mood whenever I listen to it,” said lead singer Alex Kapranos. “It’s great when you see a band and everything they put out just seems to be even better than what they did before.”
And you can feel the enjoyment in their cover. Maybe they don’t have a saxophone like the original, but the joy the members of the band feel in playing the song comes through loud and clear. (One way in which their cover is similar to the original: they sound like they’re having fun.)
“I knew that I was never gonna be able to sing like Amy [Taylor],” said Kapranos, “We’re different personalities, we have different voices, different accents, different ways of doing it. For me, it was more about tuning into the energy.”
