It’s a song that’s ubiquitous this time of year, but there’s a new cover of that Mariah Carey classic that you can add to the playlist, if you’re looking to question the true meaning of the holiday, or just want to get Grandma to hit the road.
Progressive metal project Waste/Dawn’s take on “All I want for Christmas…” (they cut the words “is you” from their version) is a heavier, darker version. Part of this is due to the fact that the lyrics have been rewritten, focusing on the downside of the season. “All I Want for Christmas…” is a song about decay, disillusionment, and the desperate request to let the entire festive facade just end. It replaces the pop idol’s longing for love with an agonizing demand for reality,” said Waste/Dawn in a press release.
The song, now filled with drop-D tuning, omnipresent double bass drums and lyrical anguish, is a cool take on a song that we’ve all heard a ton of. And, with its “all I want for Christmas is the truth” chorus, maybe it’ll get you thinking. And if it doesn’t, there’s always the single’s artwork, featuring the original album cover, but with a deer skull where Mariah’s head should be.
