Organ, softly strummed guitar, and a lullaby-esque voice…Does that sound like Paramore’s “Still Into You”? Well, it does now! Scottish singer-songwriter Lewis Capaldi just took on the 2014 chart-topper and turned it into a slower, sway-worthy live cover at BBC 1’s Live Lounge.
The delicious bed of harmonies supports his slightly melancholic, soulful voice perfectly. There are muted trumpet licks, heartfelt violins, and a locked-in acoustic drum kit. The culminating sonic landscape results in a blend of pop meets folk-and-country. This version is intriguing, heartfelt. Then there’s the bridge, which is entirely exposed a cappella for the first two phrases which then gets ramped up with guitar chugs that turn into this massive crescendo that leads us to the final chorus, with legato violin, deep, bold bass, and forte harmonies. And that little vocal-break yodel at the closing of the song yields a yearningly wonderful song closing.
