Now that Soundgarden is officially in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, here’s a spotlight on great covers of their two of their most popular tunes.
Jennah Bell — Black Hole Sun
Postmodern Jukebox ft. Haley Reinhart — Black Hole Sun
Norah Jones — Black Hole Sun
This song is less grunge, more melancholy…and full of soul. The above trio version of the song feels like a deep cosmic lullabye with its gentle piano and guitar plucks. Then, there’s Postmodern Jukebox’s Hailey-Reinhart-fronted (jazzy) version, which is a tasty genre swap. And in 2017, the enigmatic Norah Jones crooned the song to an audience in Detroit.
Steve Welsh — Fell On Black Days
Halestorm — Fell On Black Days
The 1994 album Superunkown contains the original groovin’ hit. Steve Welsch’s Alice in Chains style “Fell On Black Days” was a surprisingly effortless iteration. And Halestorm’s locked-in version from their album of covers (Reanimate) successfully put the tune in their own sonic wheelhouse.
While it’s not technically a cover, we can’t forget about lead singer Chris Cornell’s acoustic version of the tune with a live cellist either…
Given Soundgarden’s unique style and vocal timbre, their songs certainly aren’t ever a walk in the park to cover, but the above tracks are well worth a listen. Lastly, we have to give an aside for this interesting, feminine-rage-and-violin-laced version of the great “Rusty Cage”:
