Next year marks the 20th anniversary of the release of Cat Power’s album The Greatest. And to mark the anniversary, she’s releasing a new EP, recorded with the same band who played on The Greatest. She is also planning a tour early next year, which will feature a performance of The Greatest in full. The EP will feature two covers.
On the new EP, Chan Marshall (the other name Cat Power is known by) is joined by Judah Baker, Gregg Foreman, Erik Paparozzi and Jim White on a soulful cover of James Brown‘s “Try Me.” The echo-y vocals add an extra of pleading to the song, which first appeared in 1958.
The new EP, titled Redux, will also feature a cover of “Nothing Compares 2 U,” written by Prince and best known through the Sinead O’Connor version. Redux will be available on January 23rd. The anniversary tour will start in mid-February.
Performing covers are hardly new to Cat Power—her last album was a cover of Bob Dylan’s 1966 Royal Albert Hall performance in full.
