The Rions

Triple J’s most recent guest for Like A Version is The Rions: an Australian rock band known for their unique blend of pop and indie sounds. In the series, every week, a guest musician or band performs one of their own songs and covers a song they love. This time, The Rions’ Paramore cover “Ain’t It Fun” kept the vibe upbeat while managing to genre swap into something a little more like the Kinks meet the Arctic Monkeys.

The original 2013 song featured a marimba, which is a wooden-keyed, mallet-played instrument instrument. The driving rhythm of the marimba and bass had resulted in a driving combination that had the tune topping charts in no time.

This version does away with the chiming percussion loops, and all the intricate lines have been rearranged into two guitars, a bold red (Nord) keyboard, and an acoustic drum kit. From the effortless harmonies to the stompy bridge (which showcases the rhythm section), The Rions have now turned the nostalgic pop tune into fresh, chill, and sunny indie rock.

As one listener on Instagram commented, “(It is) soothing to the soul right to the very end.”
