Sadly, we are living in times where a whole bunch of protest songs from past generations feel pretty damn prescient. Singer/songwriter Margo Price makes the case with her most recent release, a cover of Bob Dylan‘s “Maggie’s Farm.”
Price just released the cover as a single, available to stream wherever you stream your music. She first covered the song at this year’s Newport Folk Festival (where Dylan also played the song in 1965) and then again at this year’s Farm Aid (where Dylan was also featured on the bill).
Her version is a little more country-tinged than Dylan’s, but the lyrics are the main focus and stand out with depressing resonance. The song begins with a plaintive harmonica, and quickly jumps into a rave-up, with a driving drum beat and a guitar playing lines that invoke the sound Al Gorgoni had on the original.
Price is on tour promoting her newest album, Hard Headed Woman and will be on the road through November and then heads back out in February.
