Pop-rock duo Aly & AJ are bringing back ’90s country. On their EP More Silver, they included a cover of Deana Carter’s “Strawberry Wine.” The EP, which has three original songs, is drenched in classic Americana.
“Strawberry Wine” originally climbed the charts back in 1996 and is deeply rooted in the country music boom of the mid-’90s. It speaks to the pangs of first love, the passage of time, and growing into womanhood. The original songs on the EP, “Deep End,” “The Last Town,” and “Out of My Feelings,” are about Aly & AJ’s childhood. So, the nostalgic themes of “Strawberry Wine” feel right at home with the sisters’ honeyed voices and sentimental storytelling.
The Michalka sisters, Alyson and Amanda Joy, started their careers as pop-rock Disney Channel child stars. After a break from the spotlight, they returned to the music scene with their current roots-driven sound. AJ Michalka told People the song hits home for them because it “is a song that Aly and I grew up listening to in our mom’s white minivan in Seattle, Washington, when we were living there for seven years as kids.”
For listeners who came of age with Carter’s single, including Aly & AJ, the cover honors the original. It brings the timeless sounds of first love to a new generation of fans, with a refresh of an American classic. As they embark on their Silver Deliverer Tour, which features the new EP tracks, audiences can look forward to hearing the cover live.
