Wisp (aka Natalie Lu) is a musician known for combining nu-metal with shoegaze sounds. The resulting combination is something completely unique—and this time, the artist took on Coldplay’s post-Britpop hit from Parachutes. “Yellow” is romantic already, but in this sonic light, it takes on a completely new feeling.
When Wisp croons “Look at the stars,” it’s not a stanza; it’s instructions which listeners feel compelled to follow. As the video pans from thistle to thistle in a golden field, the steady guitar and whispered vocals lull us for a moment. That is, until a deep wave of bass rises and falls. Next, string synths add a glow to the background. Birds fly over the field as the heavenly chorus swells, and then, it hits. A bold, distorted guitar line makes the sound not just blossom, but explode. And just like that, it calms back down, like swans floating on water.
“‘Yellow’ to me is a childhood memory that I wanted to rendition into my present life,” Wisp shared. “A song that I never understood the depth of, to now relating to the lyrics and singing them with the emotion of my romantic journeys this past year.”
